Abstract:

he transmit beampattern of traditional phased array (PA) is only a function of angle, while that of the frequency diverse array (FDA) is a function of range/time-angle. Considering that they have different advantages in application with different transmit beampattern characteristics, a joint detection method based on PA and FDA dual-mode framework is proposed in this paper. The transmit beampattern characteristics of the dual-mode framework is analyzed. The superiority of combining focused transmit energy of PA and fully spatial coverage of FDA is demonstrated. A joint optimal detector of PA and FDA dual-mode radar is proposed, and the performance enhancement based on probability of detection and detector's signal-to-noise ratio in target detection compared with single mode is given. It is shown that, the PA and FDA dual-mode radar not only gets the optimal detection performance in the mainlobe, but also detects the targets in the sidelobe with the smaller signal-to-noise ratio loss.

Key words: phased array (PA), frequency diverse array (FDA), dual-mode radar, target detection
