Abstract:

The wide band scattering echoes of electrically large size targets can be regarded as the joint effect of multiple strong scattering centers, and the echoes are characterized by high resolution range profiles (HRRP). How to utilize the echo energy of multiple scattering centers to improve the performance of monopulse angle measurement is a problem worthy of further study. In this paper, the angle maximum likelihood estimate (MLE) algorithm for wideband monopulse radar could collect all the energy spreading in multiple range cells, which can obtain signal to noise ratio (SNR) gain from HRRP. A method to get range support set of target base on echo signal itself is proposed, thus MLE can be used on range support set. Simulation result shows that all of scattering center energy in the echo signal has been utilized, which performs better than weighted mean and dominant point methods. Root mean square error (RMSE) of MLE trends to Carmer Rao low bound (CRLB), asymptotically.

Key words: wide-band radar, monopulse, maximum likelihood estimate (MLE), range support set (RSS)
